Copilot: A Practical Look at Microsoft’s New Generative AI Platform

Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) really be the workplace saviour it claims to be? Intelliworx’ Managing Director sheds light on the latest innovation from Microsoft.

We are witnessing a significant evolution in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), one that is fundamentally altering our interactions with technology and the benefits we derive from it. The convergence of chatbot interfaces and large language models enables us to communicate our needs in natural language, with the technology responding, producing, or taking action accordingly.

That’s exactly Microsoft Copilot claims to be. Copilot is an AI-powered tool that helps you work more efficiently and effectively in Microsoft 365 applications like Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more. It works by providing real-time suggestions for things like writing, coding, and data analysis. It’s like having a personal assistant at your fingertips – like what you expect from an ‘everyday AI companion’.

According to Microsoft’s official blog, Copilot is now available to enterprise customers since November 1, 2023. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers will have access to Copilot at a later date. In the meantime, Microsoft 365 subscribers can participate in the exclusive M365 Copilot Early Access Program to gain early access to Copilot features in applications like Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.

How Copilot Fares With Other AI Tools

Copilot and other AI tools share some common ground, such as their ability to leverage artificial intelligence to learn and adapt, their compatibility with existing software and platforms, and their ultimate goal of assisting humans in various tasks. However, they also exhibit distinct differences. Copilot is specifically designed for developers, focusing on code generation and still in the development stage, while other AI tools cater to a broader audience, providing insights and recommendations and reaching a higher level of maturity. In essence, Copilot is a specialised tool tailored for developers, while other AI tools offer a more general approach to problem-solving and task management. The choice between them depends on the specific needs and preferences of the user.

A Questionable Cost for a Promising Tool

Microsoft Copilot’s $30 per user per month pricing has drawn criticism from CIOs and IT decision-makers. This represents a significant increase over the existing $50 premium license for productivity apps and raises questions about the justification for such a substantial hike. Concerns centre on the added costs associated with testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, monitoring, and user education. Microsoft is expected to provide more detailed information about Copilot and its pricing at its Ignite user conference from November 14-17.

Is Copilot the Future of Work?

Microsoft 365 Copilot emerges as a potential harbinger of the future of work, introducing a personalised digital companion that adapts to users’ needs. Its dynamic learning capabilities and commitment to data privacy mark a significant leap in the IT landscape. However, the challenges associated with cost, access delays, and the need for strategic adoption raise questions about its immediate and widespread integration. As organisations weigh the advantages and limitations, Copilot prompts a critical reflection on the evolving nature of digital work environments.
