September 17, 2024: A pair of Australian companies with a focus on technology and security have called on government and industry to fully embrace IT Professional Day as part of a strategy to get more talent into the industry.
IT Professionals Day was established by a software company in the US nine years ago, it is on the third Tuesday of every September. While it is primarily a phenomenon in the US, there is a fantastic opportunity to bring the vehicle to Australia. This day is largely recognised on social media, where employers highlight outstanding technology professionals.
Intelliworx, a global managed services and cloud solutions provider, and Crayon, a global leader in IT services and Innovation, are calling on the Australian government and technology industry to bring #ITProDay to Australia with #ITProDayStraya. The aim would be to highlight the humans in our technology industry, shine a light on the real-world benefits they bring to our everyday lives, and put an emphasis on pathways into the industry.
According to the Tech Council of Australia, the technology industry contributes about $167 billion to the Australian economy annually, while employing about 861,000. But it’s not enough.
- The TCA has an aim of lifting this figure to 1.2 million jobs in the Australian economy by 2030.
- Australia needs an extra 5000 cybersecurity workers each year to avoid a massive shortfall by 2030, as professionals warn the local industry is lagging behind those in other countries.
- But AustCyber, a government-funded industry body, says Australia’s education system is only capable of delivering 2000 cybersecurity experts annually. This is also amidst more statistics that indicate the current workforce is stressed from overwork.
- Meanwhile, the TCA estimates Australia will need an Artificial Intelligence workforce of 200,000 by 2030, which is a 500 per cent increase on our current capacity.
Intelliworx and Crayon welcomed efforts by the Tech Council of Australia to bring more people into the industry by advocating to the government for greater policy focus, suggesting that the next step is the organisation could become the focal point of an annual #ITProDayStraya campaign.
Comments from Intelliworx Managing Director Shane Maher
“Australia needs to run just to stand still in order to meet the task of stocking our economy with enough technology industry workers to meet demand. #ITProDayStraya is a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of our tech professionals and inspire the next generation to join the industry.
“The Tech Council of Australia has already done a good job in transforming our local industry through progressive policies. We have seen effective policy advancements that have paved the way for growth and innovation. Australia’s technology industry has grown up and we’re looking to take the next step.
“At Intelliworx, we assist healthcare providers and financial services companies. In our experience, the technology industry isn’t a place where tickets are escalated and technology is optimised. It’s a place where patient outcomes are improved and the cost of banking is lowered.
“#ITProDayStraya could serve as a catalyst we need to showcase the careers, address skill shortages, and celebrate the real-world contributions our technology industry workers make every single day.”
Comments from Crayon SVP Channel, Warren Nolan
“At the heart of technology is the people who make it happen. #ITProDayStraya is about celebrating those individuals—their passion, dedication, and the incredible impact they have on our everyday lives. From safeguarding businesses to improving the quality of life for all Australians, these professionals are the unsung heroes of our digital age.
At Crayon, we believe it’s time to not only recognise their contributions but to inspire the next generation to join them”
