Tech trends for CIOS in 2022

In recent years, the world has seen unexpected and unprecedented changes. The future holds more transformation than ever before and businesses will need to keep up to stay ahead of information technology growth. Ever greater demands will challenge organisations to achieve digital transformation, growth and efficiency. As a result, chief information officers (CIO) are faced with the challenge of knowing what to do and how to adapt in order for their organisations to benefit.

We take a look at some of the top trends for CIOs to consider for 2022:

Cybersecurity mesh

Many security practices use one single perimeter to protect an entire IT environment, but cybersecurity meshes take a robust and flexible approach. Cybersecurity mesh is a flexible strategy where each device has its own perimeter to independently secure it, such as firewalls and network protection tools.

This means that in the event of a breach, not only will assets be protected but they also go on to protect other connected devices as well. The mesh ensures that all your business data, systems, and equipment are treated equally and securely, regardless of where they are located. Cybersecurity mesh allows organisations to bring cloud services into their zero trust architecture, which ensures users are not automatically trusted until their identity is authenticated and verified. Zero trust is the opposite of perimeter security models, which assume malicious actors are outside of a network perimeter and trusted users were inside.

Hyperautomation

Hyperautomation is an organizational strategy that enables your company to maximise the potential of technology to improve workflow, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. By automating as many processes as possible, you can free up employees to focus on high-value activities and achieve better results. Hyperautomation is not a one-time project – it is a continuous process that advances as emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision technologies come on board, being able to analyse data and make predictions about future events, or collect and analyse data in real-time from sensors and smart devices.

Edge computing

Data is critical to business operations and with the rapid growth of connected devices and the volume of data being produced by those devices, traditional data centre infrastructures can’t keep up with demand. The traditional way of doing enterprise-level computing is to have data produced at a client endpoint, such as the user’s computer. Data then moves across the internet through corporate LANs and then back again on its journey to the client endpoint.

By 2025, it is predicted that 75% of enterprise-generated data will be created outside of centralised data centres. With the need to move so many large files in situations that are often time-sensitive or disruptive, there is a massive strain on the internet due to congestion and disruption.

Edge computing is a way to move some of the storage and compute resources out of your central data centre or main hub for processing. Rather than transmitting raw data to this centralised location, it is processed as close to the client where the data was generated as possible. This reduces latency when communicating with remote devices or web applications.

Cloud-native platforms

With the emergence of cloud-native technologies, you can now build new application architectures that are resilient and agile. These newly developed applications have the ability to respond rapidly in a digital world where change is inevitable. Cloud-native platforms also improve on traditional lift-and-shift approaches, which fail to take advantage of all the benefits cloud computing has to offer and only add complexity when it comes time for maintenance.

AI-enabled business applications

Artificial intelligence has become a key tool in the global response to the pandemic, and we are likely to see its increased adoption as one of the big technology trends of 2022.

Technologies like AI, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) help employees focus on more meaningful work while automating tedious tasks. Artificial intelligence has now become the core of many organisations’ data analytics, helping to automate processes and providing predictive insights for more informed decision-making. AI-enabled solutions such as Microsoft Power Platform that offers AI Builder, businesses benefit from improved performance and productivity with ease. Integrating this capability into either Power Apps or Automate will make it easier to predict outcomes for automated processes. As AI becomes a greater organisational priority throughout 2022, it will be used to optimise business processes, reduce risks and costs for businesses, and increase efficiency.
